Founded in 1967, W. R. Berkley Corporation has grown from a small investment management firm into one of the largest commercial lines property and casualty insurers in the United States.

Along the way, we’ve been listed on the New York Stock Exchange, become a Fortune 500 company, joined the S&P 500, and seen our gross written premiums exceed $10 billion.

Today, the Berkley brand comprises nearly 60 businesses worldwide and is divided into two segments: Insurance and Reinsurance & Monoline Excess. Led by our Executive Chairman, founder, and largest shareholder, William. R. Berkley, and our President and Chief Executive Officer, W. Robert Berkley, Jr., W. R. Berkley Corporation is well-positioned to respond to opportunities for future growth.

This role may be located in one of our offices:

  • Midtown Manhattan, NY (preferred)
  • Greenwich, CT
  • Boston, MA

The offices offer hybrid work schedule with 4 days in the office; and 1 day remote where it makes sense to do so.

If not located in our NYC office, periodic travel to NYC to meet with business unit leadership will be required.  You will have day-to-day contact to learn and work with other actuaries working with different business units.

The Company is an equal employment opportunity employer.  #LI-Hybrid

In this role, you’ll be part of a larger actuarial team, but function as the go-to actuary for a business unit, responsible for:

  • Quarterly reserve analyses and presenting results to leadership
  • Annual loss ratio forecasts and pricing support for underwriters
  • Regular updates and explanations for management (e.g., rate changes, claims trends)
  • Supporting teams across underwriting, claims, reinsurance, finance, data/IT, and risk

More Than Just Numbers

This is a great fit for someone who enjoys working with others and wants to apply their skills across the business. You’ll:

  • Work closely with underwriters and leaders to support smart decisions
  • Help improve our data, tools, and processes for everyone
  • Lead projects where actuarial thinking can make a real difference

Why Join Us?

  • Be a key contributor in a growing company
  • Take on a wide range of responsibilities with support to grow into leadership positions
  • Connect with and learn from over 200 actuaries across our global team

What We’re Looking For

  • Solid technical background, ideally with Python, R, or similar capabilities
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a quantitative field
  • 5–8 years of P&C actuarial experience
  • FCAS or near-FCAS (or international equivalent)
  • Working knowledge of SQL and Python or R to manipulate and retrieve data
  • Executive-level communication skills able to interact effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Independent thinker who can challenge the status quo while maintaining professional and collaborative relationships
  • Prior experience with reserving, insurance financial reporting and controls preferred but not necessary
We do not accept any unsolicited resumes from external recruiting agencies or firms.

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full time regular employees which for this role include:

• Eligible to participate in annual discretionary bonus.
• Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability, Wellness, Paid Time Off, 401(k) and generous Profit-Sharing plans.
