[ Program Overview

Summer internships are intended for undergraduate students who will be completing their degree in December '24 or May '25. We are unable to pursue candidates who would require Visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Responsibilities of this role include:

There are two goals in our actuarial internship program. First and foremost, to give students an opportunity to explore the actuarial field as a possible career choice. Second, we use internship programs as a recruiting tool to hire full-time actuarial analysts. The internship will include a variety of actuarial research activities dependent upon the need of the department at the time of the internship. They may include expense studies, lapse studies, rate management analysis, product pricing, process automation, etc. These activities will provide an overall exposure to the profession of actuarial science.

Projects vary each summer because they are real world experiences. They are not simulated projects, but projects that have relevance to immediate business needs of the company. Successful interns from this program get first consideration for placement in the full-time Actuarial Rotational Program.

Required Qualifications:
  • Successful track record in a four-year degree program, in Math or Actuarial Science.
  • Proven project and people leadership skills which includes developing strategies, motivating individuals, providing feedback, and driving for results.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including listening and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills to balance multiple projects and duties.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to think creatively.


Securian Financial believes in hybrid work as an integral part of our culture. Associates get the benefit of working both virtually and in our offices. If you're in a commutable distance (90 minutes) you'll join us 2-3 days each week in our offices to collaborate and build relationships. Our policy allows flexibility for the reality of business and personal schedules. When working in our offices at least two days per week isn't feasible (vacations, illness, travel, etc.), an eight day per month standard is an option.

Physical Job Requirements:
  • Ability to utilize the keyboard, computer and/or mouse for up to 8 hours per day
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week
  • Ability to utilize the phone and/or virtual meeting platform for 1-4 hours per day
