The Hartford currently has an open position for Actuarial candidates as part of the Home Rate Adequacy Team. The position includes pricing & planning responsibilities for the Home ($1.0B) line of businesses. The Hartford is determined to beat the competition and we are improving our profitability using continuous innovation and a deep understanding of the business. Personal Lines has support and visibility at the senior management levels, making it a high-profile opportunity.

The position will be part of a team responsible for understanding and analyzing the performance of the Personal Home class plans, using this information to price and plan for the future, and advancing monitoring to stay on top of leading indicators that may impact pricing and reserving work. This role will provide strong partnership opportunities within the Pricing & Reserving functions as well as with State Product, State Pricing, and our Data Science partners.

Responsibilities:

Specifically, responsibilities include:

  • Pricing support for PL Home rate indications that project rate needed to achieve a 15% return on equity. Underlying analyses leverage internal and external data sources and include loss development factors, loss, and premium trend projections, understanding current and future expense ratios.
  • Participate in the Loss Ratio Projection analysis projecting future loss ratios and highlighting risks and future profit opportunities.
  • Think creatively to build tools/analytics, using enhanced statistical tools, such as R and Shiny applications allowing us to monitor each component of loss ratio performance (e.g., loss and premium trends) at the deepest grain
  • Analyze internal and external monitoring reports serving as leading indicators to changes in rate indications and loss ratio projections so we can respond quickly to any changes in the environment or our internal book
  • Collaborate with partners on key assumptions going into the loss ratio planning analysis, ensuring assumptions incorporate the latest information from all areas
  • Collaborate closely with partners in Reserving, Actuarial, Claims, and product (among others) to present findings and recommendations that will guide future decisions and incorporate the latest information from all areas into future projections
  • Results driven with commitment to meeting deadlines
  • Attends to detail and manages multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Experience & Skills

  • 3+ years of experience in P&C insurance pricing, Personal Lines experience is a plus
  • ACAS preferred, but open to candidates with appropriate knowledge background
  • Working knowledge of R and SQL (preferred)
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with thorough attention to detail. Ability to own projects and anticipate obstacles and customer needs.
  • Experience working independently as well as part of a team.
  • Proactive individual, who challenges existing processes, can influence others and can drive a process to a conclusion while meeting critical deadlines.
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing priorities. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey technical results to the business and influence decisions.
  • Team player with strong collaboration skills and ability to build trusting, effective partnerships.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$79,000 - $140,000

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
