Overview:

Talcott Financial Group is seeking an Actuarial Consultant to join the Actuarial Student Program and support the COLI Product Management team. The team focuses on several responsibilities:
  • Managing the annual experience analysis including mortality and surrenders.
  • Managing the setting of credited interest rates and loan interest rates
  • Determining mortality adjustments on experience setting on experience-rated cases
  • Managing stable value wraps
  • Answering questions from clients and brokers

*Our ideal candidate shall work in our Hartford, CT. office in a hybrid work arrangement.

About Talcott Financial Group's Actuarial Student Program

Our program fosters leadership skills while supporting employees' progress towards the attainment of Fellowship with the Society of Actuaries (FSA). Employees within the Actuarial Student Program rotate across the company in roles of 12-18 months duration, affording diverse learning experiences and opportunities to take on impactful projects. Rotations cover all product lines and include actuarial functions such as Predictive Modeling, Pricing, Valuation, Asset Liability Management, Forecasting, Enterprise Risk Management, and Investment Management. The program is managed by a committee of actuarial leaders, including our Chief Actuary, that actively mentor and support students. Talcott looks towards the Actuarial Student Program for our next generation of Actuarial leaders.

Attaining Professional Designations

Students are expected to complete at least one component of the FSA pathway every 18 months. Program support includes:
  • Covering the cost of exam fees, module fees, and study materials such as textbooks, study manuals, and online courses
  • Generous paid study time for exams and modules; and
  • A community of individuals studying together.

In addition to competitive company benefits, students receive raises for passing exams and first-time pass bonuses. Students that attain their ASA and FSA designations are also eligible for awards. Promotions are based on job performance and exam progress.

Career and Leadership Development

The Actuarial Student Program is committed to developing well-rounded Actuarial leaders. Many opportunities supplement rotational on-the-job training and technical knowledge gained through the FSA pathway. Opportunities include:
  • Training courses focused on critical soft skills, such as business writing, negotiation techniques, and managerial skills
  • Student speaker series to develop presentation skills
  • Access to the Society of Actuaries' webinars and events
  • Supporting our community through volunteer events.

Leadership roles for senior students are encouraged and include management, recruiting, interviewing, teaching courses, and representing Talcott at industry events.

Responsibilities:
  • Managing the annual experience analysis including mortality and surrenders.
  • Managing the setting of credited interest rates and loan interest rates
  • Assist with mortality experience setting on experience-rated cases
  • Assist with creating illustrations as needed
  • Assist with systems conversion projects
  • Identify and implement reporting/process improvement opportunities as they arise in the course of work
  • Assist in the design, build, testing, and maintenance of best-in-class analytical tools and models that support various uses including risk management, valuation, capital planning and other financial reporting activities
  • Develop the insights and knowledge to understand the analytics and financial metrics this team is responsible for to respond to business inquiries
  • Assist with ad hoc projects that support Talcott Financial Group strategies.
  • Collaborating with other Talcott Financial Group actuaries and Finance teammates to explain trends and irregularities within the results

Besides working with others on the COLI Product Management team, our selected candidate can expect to coordinate and work with other departments including Enterprise Risk Management, IT, Finance, Investments and Modeling.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, or related field
  • Work experience or internships in insurance or finance, including involvement with actuarial valuation, modeling, or pricing work is strongly preferred.
  • At least two successful actuarial exams
  • Strong teamwork skills to foster an effective working relationship with multiple areas
  • Strong work ethic, including the ability to multi-task and balance priorities and the desire to take pride in and ownership of work products
  • Self-confidence in dealing with new situations and initiatives that have not been done before
  • Desire to automate and improve current processes and procedures
  • Effective communication skills and strength in organizational capabilities are a plus
  • Good organization/project management skills
  • Familiarity with Excel, R-Studio, Power BI, and SQL.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and take ownership of all aspects of the role.
  • Willingness to consult with various colleagues to gain deep familiarity of the business, understand modeling and assumptions.
