Our Commercial Lines Actuarial department is seeking an Actuarial Director for Workers' Compensation to join our growing team in our Worcester, MA office or remote work location.
SUMMARY:
This leadership role is responsible for managing a team of pricing actuaries focused on the Workers' Compensation line of business, reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President Actuary of Commercial Auto and Workers' Compensation. The Workers' Compensation book has nearly $400 million in annual earned premium and is one of the fastest-growing core lines, requiring a strategic, analytical, and business-oriented actuarial approach.
The Actuarial Director of Workers' Compensation provides overall management and technical oversight to a team of analysts with varying degrees of experience, while also contributing hands-on to high-impact projects. The Director partners closely with other actuaries and business leaders across State Management, Underwriting, and Claims to support profitable growth and pricing sophistication.
This is a Full-time, Exempt role.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
- Lead and manage a team of actuarial analysts, ensuring timely execution of deliverables while fostering professional development and career growth.
- Own and execute state rate reviews and filings, including annual rate revision analysis and objection management, with a focus on regulatory alignment and process improvement.
- Develop and oversee actuarial assumptions such as IBNR forecasting, loss trend analysis, and rate indications.
- Monitor and analyze profitability of the Workers' Compensation book, incorporating industry benchmarks and providing actionable recommendations to business partners.
- Be an actuarial company representative, actively participating in Workers' Compensation bureau forum meetings
- Leverage predictive analytics to implement and monitor pricing platforms and segmentation strategies.
- Oversee large account pricing, including ownership of the Large Account Pricing Tool for Workers' Compensation and other lines as needed.
- Collaborate with field leadership and underwriting teams to understand market dynamics and support strategic pricing decisions.
- Partner across Commercial Lines pricing teams to align on cross-line initiatives and rate review processes.
- Communicate technical analyses and strategic insights clearly and effectively to senior management and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Drive operational efficiency, continuously seeking improvements in pricing workflows and analytical processes.
- Provide performance and compensation management for team members, aligning goals with organizational priorities.
- Participate in recruiting, training, and community-building activities to support the development of actuarial talent.
- Capable of testifying at rate hearings, representing the company's actuarial position when needed.
WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in a relevant technical field
- Seven+ years of technical experience in multiple LOB and/or actuarial disciplines such as pricing, reserving or advanced analytics.
- Experience with predictive modeling preferred
- Minimum of 2 years in management capacity
- ACAS required, FCAS preferred
- Advanced communication skills
- Advanced skills using Microsoft Office, including Excel
- Intermediate programming skills, including the ability to develop and automate processes
- Demonstrated knowledge of all techniques used to model various assumptions
- Able to apply and interpret company policies and procedures
- Able to direct activities of others, motivate and develop staff
