Job Summary:

The Standard seeks a talented FSA or near FSA to join the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) Team in our Retirement Products division. The FHLB Team manages our membership in the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines and works closely with our investment teams pursuing two key strategies in support of The Standard:  spread earnings by investing proceeds from Bank loans in fixed income investments and backstop liquidity by maintaining excess borrowing capacity.  You’ll also have visibility and an opportunity to influence senior leadership as you help drive product results and help shape future decisions.  You’ll be involved in constructing our financial statements and analyzing the results for our business unit, eventually presenting results to our leadership.  You may also have opportunities to support other Teams in Retirement Products’ institutional products group.

We seek a strong individual who is influential and can work with and communicate effectively with other groups including Standard Mortgage Investors (SMI), Investments, Corporate Actuarial, Treasury, Accounting, Financial, Legal, and staff at the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines. You will represent the actuarial point of view and be influential in understanding our products as well as analyzing and communicating results.  Embodying a continuous improvement mindset, you will keep an eye to process and help build out more effective processes and tools to help our team operate more effectively and efficiently.

Principal duties and responsibilities include:

  • Prepare, review, and analyze financial results of the product line, design and build reports and support, and identify and communicate drivers and trends in the profitability of our products.
  • Actuarial projection modeling in GGY Axis for ALM, embedded value, and asset adequacy projects.
  • Develop and maintain programs, reports, and databases for the analysis of new and inforce business and experience, including the identification of trends and drivers.
  • Analyze internal and external economic data to analyze the business and advise how we can better implement our strategy.
  • Keep an eye to continuous improvement and identify ways to enhance and streamline our processes.
  • Review data for quality, identifying issues and anomalies.
  • Identify and communicate information to management to assist and influence corporate and divisional financial strategies.


Education/Experience:

  • This position is the highest level of the Actuarial Candidate career path prior to promotion into a position with senior Fellowship responsibility.
  • Prior responsible experience sufficient to have gained a seasoned actuarial business perspective required.
  • ASA designation required.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in mathematics, actuarial science, business or a related field preferred.

  • The position operates from a very seasoned vantage point resulting in "big picture" thinking, business insight, actuarial innovation and intuition, influence, and leadership.
  • Very familiar with internal and external statistical trends, factors, issues, and data impacting underwriting results and business strategies.
  • Leverages this knowledge and insight, combined with advanced and creative actuarial methods, to identify risks and opportunities, derive innovative solutions, and drive strategic business actions.


Independence:

  • Determines methods and procedures on new assignments with limited guidance.
  • Provides guidance and acts as a resource/mentor to others in the actuarial career.
  • Anticipates customer needs and takes initiative to address business challenges.
  • Seeks continuous improvement of processes and analyses.

Influence:

  • May serve as a lead on cross department/division project teams to manage, plan, implement and/or sponsor large complex actuarial studies, pricing strategies and policies.
  • Effective people skills in managing, influencing and resolving conflicts.
  • Due to very advanced and sophisticated actuarial conceptual ability and highly relevant business know-how, the position works closely with Product Management and other functions within the company to achieve profitability and growth goals, and/or to provide actuarial analyses, responses and communications for various audiences inside and outside the company.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert having frequent interaction with senior division management or other senior actuarial personnel.
  • Exhibits effective communication skills with non-technical audience. May direct and train lower level students but is not an administrative supervisor.

Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.

 

  • Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.

Salary Range:

$102,250.00 - $150,000.00
