Liberty Mutual Global Retail Markets Actuarial is seeking a Manager, Actuary to lead our Loss Trend Analytics Auto team. The auto team is responsible for performing deep dives into emerging loss trend risks for both personal and business auto insurance; using advanced analytical and multivariate techniques to forecast accident period frequency and severity for both Liberty Mutual and the industry; developing an approach for proactive loss trend recognition and communicating the results of their work to senior management and other stakeholders. This position will report directly to the Director of the Loss Trend Analytics team within the Modeling & Analytics Actuarial organization.

The successful candidate will have excellent business judgment and influencing skills, enjoy identifying and solving complex analytical problems, be comfortable owning a critical process that receives significant visibility, have the ability to explain such work in non-technical (business) contexts, and be capable of driving change to meet the business needs of customers. Strong communication skills are essential as there will be a significant level of interaction with other functional areas (e.g., Product Management, Claims, Non-Price Predictive Modeling, and Reserving).

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for leading a team of 3 analysts in developing in-depth analytical analyses for all GRM-US auto coverages, including the use of multivariate approaches and internal and external data sources, to explain historical frequency and severity and forecast future loss.
  • Own the analysis, stakeholder management and communication of the auto quarterly trend process and ensure that storylines are consistent between the various deliverables (Economic Trend Report, Quarterly Forecasts, Board of Director support, etc.).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional areas such as Product, Claims, and Trends Monitoring & Reporting to understand and isolate various drivers of loss trends for auto and ensure that we?re aligned on basis for selections.
  • Create a culture of continuous improvement and documentation within the auto team that organically creates efficiencies to our data processes, analysis templates, and trend presentations.
  • Monitor internal and external emerging risks to our auto portfolio and identify how best to incorporate into our trend selections

  • Develop talent by building and elevating capabilities within the team, including development and talent evaluation and forming resilient teams that can attract talent with wide backgrounds that contribute to diversity of thought. Working across teams to ensure highest priority items are being addressed with the appropriate amount of resources across the entire Loss Trend Analytics organization, while owning regular deliverables.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Masters degree preferred
  • Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) or near-FCAS designation preferred
  • 5-10 years progressively responsible experience, including supervisory experience
  • Ability to foster teamwork and relationships across organizational line
  • Knowledge of underwriting concepts including company/agency relationships’ importance to the business success.
  • Written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively express technical actuarial and statistical concepts to non-technical individuals internal and external to the organization
  • Advanced decision making, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Expands/maintains Actuarial professional knowledge through society (CAS/AAA) publications and meetings/conferences
