Pacific Life is investing in bright, agile, and diverse talent to contribute to our mission of innovating our business and creating a superior customer experience. We're actively seeking a talented Assistant Actuary to join the Institutional Division's Pricing & Data Analytics Team.

As an Assistant Actuary, you will play a key role in Pacific Life's growth and long-term success. You will be responsible for the development of key assumptions for the Pension Risk Transfer, DCLI and Stable Value products, including the development of experience studies and predictive analytics models.

Location is flexible, allowing you to sit in Newport Beach, CA, Omaha, NE, or Lynchburg, VA. We are open to 100% remote for the right candidate, but preference will be given to individuals located or willing to relocate near an office.

While our team aims to hire at the Assistant Actuary level, candidates who meet most but not all requirements are encouraged to apply. Actual job title will be based on experience and skillset.

How you will make an impact:

  • Perform experience studies to support the setting/updating/monitoring of actuarial assumptions used for pricing, valuation, business management, capital management, and forecasting purposes
  • Produce analyses to support the development of pricing assumptions
  • Support the annual assumption update process for in-force projections and valuation
  • Collaborate with and provide actuarial guidance to the Data Analytics team to develop models for certain assumptions
  • Use modern data techniques (Python, R, SQL) to efficiently analyze and model historical experience


  • Develop expertise with underlying admin system data sources to aid in understanding evolving claims practices and experience history
  • Build dashboards, automating data flow from source systems to insightful summaries
  • Exercise appropriate controls with assumptions implementation
  • Train and mentor actuarial students as needed
  • Actively pursue the FSA credential


The experience you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Finance, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent work experience
  • ASA with 4+ years of strong actuarial work experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required with VBA coding experience


  • Related programming (R, Python), data visualization (Alteryx, Power BI, Tableau) and database (SQL) skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team as well as manage long-term projects
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills


What will make you stand out:

  • Prior experience with Pension Risk Transfer pricing or valuation
  • Experience with actuarial modeling systems, particularly Prophet


  • Knowledge of statistical modeling concepts and their application to mortality data

Base Pay Range:

The base pay range noted provides a basis to determine the appropriate offer dependent upon several factors including but not limited to geographic location, experience, skills, education and pay equity. Also, most employees are eligible for additional incentive pay.

$103,000.00 - $128,800.00 - $173,900.00
