Job Description

The AVP Actuarial position will be based in Johnston, IA and support the Agribusiness P&C group within the Agriculture Division, reporting to the SVP Actuarial. Responsibilities will focus on assisting Agribusiness with pricing projects, updating and/or modernizing rating variables, rate monitoring, rate filing support and financial planning.

Many tasks will be performed on a recurring basis, either monthly, quarterly or annually, and will often have tight completion timelines. Other tasks will require research and development and may have project timelines that span months. There will also be ad hoc requests by management that are of an immediate nature. At any time, multiple projects may be ongoing, so the ability to shift focus quickly from one project to another is necessary.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare profitability reviews for Agribusiness lines. This includes updating factors and trends, then communicating these insights to senior underwriters and senior management,
  • Monitor renewal rates, new business adequacy, inflation impact etc.
  • Support reinsurance submissions, both external and internal.
  • Proactively engaged with the wider Actuarial community (e.g., Reserving, CAT teams) in knowledge sharing/ common actuarial projects.
  • Prepare information for financial reporting requirements and quarterly reconciliations.
  • Assist leadership in the preparation and presentation of quarterly reserve reviews to Management.
  • Collaborate with the Product, IT and Finance departments and other relevant functional disciplines to design and manage processes aimed to gain efficiency in collecting, aggregating and presenting actuarial information.
  • Assist in the development of a rate need / profitability study or monthly role forward for North America senior management.
  • Assisting in the preparation of various rate filings and insurance department data calls including crop rate filings.
  • Responding to periodic requests by producing ad hoc analyses and reports.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience in ratemaking and portfolio management activities.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent attention to detail.
  • Commercial and/or Personal insurance knowledge.
  • Strong communicator who can articulate complex messages to a broad range of audiences in a clear and concise manner, both verbally and written; proficiency in English required.
  • Strong systems / software/ data management skills, and ability to learn new software on own initiative. Working knowledge on the below is a plus: Microsoft Office, VBA, ResQ, Radar, R, Python and Dataiku.
  • Knowledge of SQL, R, Qlikview/QlikSense and/or Power BI is not required but considered a plus.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work well with people, to lead, develop and train staff to promote internal growth and development.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or similar technical discipline preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years actuarial experience.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate with management, finance, regulators and other actuaries.
  • ACAS/FCAS preferred.
  • Ability to learn quickly and be proficient in each of the following: R, Microsoft Excel (VBA), SQL, TM1.
  • Experience in other MS Office applications, including Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to provide clear and concise verbal and written communications of analyses, results, and work products to both actuarial and non-actuarial customers.
  • Should be well-organized and able to maintain good documentation and record keeping.
