Job Description Summary
Our Property and Casualty (P&C) Actuarial team members have opportunities to use state-of-the-art tools, are encouraged to innovate, and learn to master actuarial methodologies. If this sounds like a place you could thrive, then we want to know more about you!

As the AVP of E&S Specialty Programs Pricing, you will work with Underwriting (UW) to ensure achievement of price adequacy and achieve business outcomes. You'll lead and manage pricing strategy, indications, analysis, and measurement of rate achieved for these lines of business. You will be a key leader and thought partner within the Programs and Alternative Ventures leadership team. Key organizational partnerships include Reserving, UW leadership, Finance, other Pricing Leaders, Data and Analytics, and centralized finance and actuarial tools shop. You will be tasked with advancing tools and techniques within the Excess & Surplus/Programs lines and have a laser focus on developing talent within the pricing space.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develops strategy and consistent leadership for the pricing function for Programs lines of business.
  • Provides thought leadership and drives advanced analytics tools and techniques to deliver pricing advantage in partnership with advanced analytics team.
  • Oversees Program new product analysis and vetting while working across the enterprise with key partners.
  • Provides actuarial support for reinsurance transactions and negotiations.
  • Ensures timely delivery of actuarial requirements for tools and systems.
  • Influences business decisions and collaborates in strategic planning and policy development for the company as well as tactical planning for a specific division. Ensures execution of corporate initiates.
  • Hires, develops and manages actuarial/finance talent. Responsible for talent and succession planning.


May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to VP, Strategic Pricing Leader - CL, E&S/S, & NWAG; manages a team of four direct reports and nine indirect reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in actuarial science, business, finance, mathematics, economics, or related field with strong quantitative orientation preferred. MBA or equivalent desirable.

License/Certification/Designation: Fellowship in Casualty Actuary Society preferred. Associate in the Casualty Actuarial Society required.

Experience: Typically, ten or more years related experience (pricing, actuarial, product) with Specialty and Programs. Prior management experience required.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

Excess and surplus lines market knowledge. Proven track record in dramatically improving existing actuarial processes as well as envisioning and delivering completely new processes. Ability to identify needs of the organization and develop a multi-year strategic plan. Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams and influence to achieve goals. Ability to attract, hire and develop strong talent. Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to build and defend a business case, provide executive level recommendations and reporting. Proven ability to comprehend and explain actuarial concepts and other advanced technical concepts. Ability to assimilate information and make recommendations based on a combination of factors. Foundational knowledge of technology and actuarial data and tools; advanced modeling experience preferred.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. If a Sales job, Sales Incentives, based on performance goals are possible in addition to this range.

The national salary range for AVP, Pricing - E&S Specialty Programs : $159,000.00-$313,000.00

The expected starting salary range for AVP, Pricing - E&S Specialty Programs : $167,000.00 - $279,000.00
