You've been building to this for a long time. As a Director of Actuarial Consulting, you'll provide strategic direction to project teams in the delivery of actuarial consulting services to both internal and external commercial customers. You'll review forecasts and trend analyses, oversee the development of actuarial pricing models, develop pricing methodologies and assumptions and help us write the next chapter in health system performance. This position offers a mix of both traditional actuarial projects and well as unique, one-of-a-kind opportunities to solve client problems in new and innovative ways. This position is also responsible for developing sales of actuarial and other Optum healthcare offerings relevant to payer clients, through new business as well as through renewals and upselling to existing clients.

This role requires senior level relationships with payer clients, both technical and professional leadership of actuarial managers and staff in the delivery of best in class actuarial and other strategic consulting services to clients; and an ability to meet sales targets in a widely diversified healthcare services organization that is experiencing and expects continued large annual growth. The role requires an ability to communicate effectively well with all levels of healthcare organization technical and non-technical staff, and an ability to develop strong client relationships through credible industry knowledge, and relevant expert strategic advice.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Client Engagement Delivery / Business Development (80% Time Allocation):
    • Perform a lead role to clients in day-to-day delivery of large-scale projects / programs, which are defined as high cost, high complexity and / or high risk
    • Serve as day-to-day project manager to ensure that tasks are completed on time and on-budget. This includes developing workplans and staffing approaches to ensure the successful completion of complex projects
    • Serve in an advisory role to clients on business strategy, operational effectiveness and healthcare best practices
    • Ensure utilization rate and billable revenues are attained annually
    • Provide strategic input to the development of program roadmap and timelines
    • Create a team-oriented work climate that enables professional development and encourages creative solutions and strategies
    • Support the management of resources within programs
    • Support program communication plan and execution
    • Require that quality assurance methods are implemented within the program
    • Provide status updates and review of programs to senior leadership
    • Provide coaching and mentoring to junior consultants and analysts with the goal of developing and retaining talent within the organization
  • Sales / Growth Leadership (20% Time Allocation):
    • Leverage your personal network to identify new clients and expand existing client business in the Commercial payer market, as well as opportunities in other healthcare markets
    • Leverage and collaborate with Optum actuarial and other personnel as appropriate in the pursuit of sales opportunities
    • Achieve sales consistent with organization targets and individual / team quotas
    • Develop proposals and statements of work for client engagements. Participate in the RFI, RFP and sales process
    • Participate in the development and closure of major client engagements involving cross Optum solutions
    • Complete financial analysis and develop client business case for proposed solutions
    • Define contract terms and conditions and pricing models for new solutions
    • Actively participate in contributing thought leadership for Optum to the market, including assistance in building consulting marketing and sales collateral
    • Establish trusted partner relationships within Optum to expand the Optum Consulting footprint
    • Facilitate development of business segment and enterprise level planning and program objective setting
    • Obtain high client satisfaction scores (>90%)
    • Develop and maintain client references
    • Identify and develop consulting offerings, products and services solutions that align with key market needs and or client initiatives

Required Qualifications:

  • ASA or FSA designation
  • 8+ years of actuarial experience
  • 2+ years of work experience in an actuarial consulting organization
  • Experience managing and providing work direction to a team
  • Experience interacting with senior management teams
  • Proven problem-solving skills (identification of issue, causes, solution, implementation plan)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Consulting experience including project management and business development
  • Significant experience working with multiple core actuarial functions for Commercial health plans including: product development, pricing, reserving, trend analysis, network analysis, underwriting, and rate filing
  • Experience with ACA individual and small group product development, pricing, and rate filing
  • Experience leveraging traditional and non-traditional data assets
  • Advanced level of proficiency using R, SAS, Azure Databricks, Python, SQL, .net
  • Proficiency with Data Visualization, Predictive Analytics and Statistical Modeling
  • Proficiency working with various file formats (JSON, csv, xls, delimited text files)
  • Demonstrated interest and ability to develop new technical approaches, methods, and analytical tools that can potentially improve on traditional actuarial methods and approaches
  • Demonstrated desire and / or willingness to actively develop and pursue sales opportunities both individually and as part of teams
  • Proven ability to think strategically, proven experience laying out strategy, developing products and / or services from ground up that are sold in Commercial payer markets
  • Proven ability to speak credibly to current industry issues, regulatory and competitive challenges, and practices regarding Commercial markets
  • Proven ability to identify and implement creative and innovative solutions to new and unique client business problems
  • Proven ability to influence, motivate and correct others in a positive, constructive and respectful way

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
