Job Summary:

In this highly visible role in the Individual Annuities team, you’ll have direct responsibility for key aspects of the IA actuarial operations including: pricing, renewal and new money rate setting, reinsurance pricing and research, and other ad-hoc research projects.


You’ll put your strategic thinking to work as you develop, price, and recommend rates for new products, helping IA widen its distribution footprint, in order to be able to sustainably compete and grow in the annuity marketplace.  You’ll partner and interface with key stakeholders including IA’s Division Head, Sales and Marketing team, Corporate Actuarial, IT, and operations teams on various projects.  This role provides a unique opportunity to drive business results as IA works to continue to grow its product suite and distribution footprint.


The ideal candidate will have the ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with a wide range of non-technical functions and will also bring a strong technical background including depth in product development, product pricing, rate setting, actuarial modeling (AXIS experience strongly preferred), strong technical communication, and exposure to asset-liability modeling.   

Reporting Relationships

You’ll report to the head Individual Annuities Actuary and have a team of four actuaries (three credentials) as well as one offshore actuary reporting to you.

Primary Responsibilities

In this role, you will: 

  • Influence ALM strategy by partnering with investment team and corporate actuaries on new and existing product suite.
  • Analyze profitability and risk profile of new business, working with Corporate Actuarial and Investments teams in order to improve IA’s understanding of the business written.
  • Drive strategic recommendations for inforce renewal rate setting in order to optimize business results.
  • Support product development process by driving pricing and risk analysis of new and existing products.  Partner with product manager to create and vet product concepts and support key stakeholders across the organization as we leverage the product development process to push business growth plan forward. 
  • Develop a quantitative understanding of the impact of reinsurance on the industry and on The Standard’s potential product suite
  • Support rate setting component to the three-year financial plan to senior management.
  • Work with a team of five actuaries, providing mentorship, instilling ownership of results, and developing Moody’s AXIS modeling skills as well as attract, retain, and develop new talent.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Strong competency in risk analysis and assessment via modelling
  • Experience with fixed / indexed individual rate setting
     

Desired:

  • Experience and interest in leading others highly preferred
  • Eight or more years of actuarial experience
  • AXIS experience
  • Product development and management experience

Education/Experience:

  • Requires significant prior responsible experience sufficient to have gained a seasoned actuarial business perspective.
  • ASA designation, or equivalent, required. FSA may be required depending on the specific role and is expected for responsibilities over reserve adequacy and product filings.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in mathematics, actuarial science, business or a related field preferred.

Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.

 

  • Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.

Salary Range:

$140,000.00 - $210,000.00
