Overview of the Position

The position is part of the Middle & Large Property Actuarial pricing team supporting the Middle Market Property and Large Property lines of business, representing nearly $600m in written premium. This position will work in close partnership with our Underwriting Divisions, Product and other business partners.

This opportunity allows a motivated candidate to join an exciting team of actuaries with robust analytical and technical backgrounds in the Property line of business.  This individual will serve as a thought partner in identifying and executing on enhanced capabilities in the areas of catastrophe modeling, reinsurance, budgeting and portfolio management. A primary focus of this position is to support continuous enhancements to the Middle Market Property and Large Property Benchmark Pricing models which support underwriters in making good pricing judgments on relatively complex, heterogeneous risks.

Please note, candidates pursuing exams as well as those not pursuing exams will be considered for this role. This role can be part of our Actuarial Student Program for an individual meeting requirements for entry into the program. Responsibilities

  • Provide recommendations on key methodology decisions for pricing models
  • Collaborate with business partners to blend underwriting expertise into model selections
  • Leverage advanced actuarial techniques to continue enhancing analyses as well as gain a deeper understanding of the Property line of business
  • Form partnerships with stakeholders across Underwriting, Product and other parts of Actuarial
  • Support incorporation of predictive modeling throughout actuarial life cycle in use cases including rate indications, loss ratio projection and monthly monitoring
  • Analyze and communicate dislocation to leadership and business partners

Experience & Skills

  • Degree in math, actuarial science, economics, or other quantitative analytic field. Prior property pricing/ratemaking experience a plus.
  • 3-5+ years of insurance experience.
  • Very strong technical, analytical and data skills; Excel required and experience with R and/or SQL preferred.
  • Experience working independently as well as part of a team.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with thorough attention to detail.  Ability to own projects and anticipate obstacles and customer needs.
  • Thought leader. Seeks new ways to approach analysis and projects to solve business problems.
  • Experience building successful business partnerships.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage time effectively in an environment with multiple priorities and stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to audiences of various levels and diverse technical backgrounds.
  • Predictive Modeling experience in SAS, EMB, R, Python or other modeling software preferred, but not required.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$90,000 - $140,000
