Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced actuarial professional to join our Global Actuarial Team and support our fast-growing Canadian operation. This position will report directly into the North American actuarial team and support BHSI’s Canadian team in Toronto. We seek an individual with deep knowledge of multiple property & casualty products and who is intellectually curious, self-motivated and a collaborative team member.

This position will be based in Toronto, ON and be an active member of the Canadian management team. In this role, you will be responsible for providing superior actuarial support to the Canadian team, including but not limited to, pricing and profitability analyses, individual account pricing, actuarial diligence on new products or program opportunities, and a contributing member of the Canadian management team. BHSI’s value of collaboration will be prominent as this individual will work with various functions across the organization and drive projects and deliverables for Canada. The ideal individual will have both management experience and hands on technical abilities to complete the necessary deliverables. A candidate with a passion for building actuarial infrastructure, cross functional interaction and a desire to constantly learn and apply new skills will be successful in this role.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Provide a full range of Actuarial services to the Canadian Team.
• Ability to drive the understanding of portfolio management and profitability throughout organization. Recommend and implement actions as necessary.
• Research new pricing techniques and enhance existing methods.
• Analyze results based on past and current trends, projections, and rate competitiveness.
• Work directly with local production underwriters and company management to ensure marketability and profitability of the business.
• Work with Global Actuarial Team to develop quantitative tools to be used by underwriters in pricing individual risks.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

• FCAS or FCIA is required.
• Deep knowledge of the Canadian P&C market.
• 10+ years of experience in an actuarial role.
• Understanding of catastrophe peril modeling and pricing preferred.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
• Management experience.
• Advanced proficiency of Excel and SQL.
• Proven track record of collaboration across functions delivering quality results in an efficient manner.
• Intellectual curiosity and a passion for problem solving.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
• Strong desire to learn from and share knowledge with teammates.
• Effective time management, with the ability to juggle multiple projects at the same time.
