This position supports pricing for the Group Benefits Life/AD&D products for employer groups with fewer than 1,000 employees and association markets.  The candidate will have the opportunity to assist in pricing of nonstandard cases, special projects, setting target levels, minimum loss ratio monitoring, op plan etc.  Other primary responsibilities will be to support Association and Accident & Health pricing within Group Benefits.

*This is a hybrid role, 2 days/week in the Hartford, CT office required.

Opportunities:

  • Interact with both actuaries and non-actuaries in a team based environment.
  • Learn about Life/AD&D pricing from the case specific to whole book of business level.
  • Own individual projects and see them through from start to finish.
  • Support various lines of association business and interact with key business partners.
  • Support various Life/AD&D business lines and assist on case pricing and rate adequacy.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Monitor portability profitability and provide recommendations on rate strategy on block.
  • Develop/revise pricing tools used by actuaries and underwriters to improve pricing accuracy and efficiency Life/AD&D/A&H businesses.  
  • Identify enhancements and lead efforts to improve rating methodologies, including supporting our rating systems and analytical capabilities (PRISM/FUSION/Ratabase/ARE)
  • Support Non-Standard Request pricing for Life, AD&D, Association, and A&H.
  • Support ad-hoc pricing requests, including pricing Retiree Buyouts and Survivor Income Benefits.
  • Work with underwriting on Life/AD&D, Association, and A&H case pricing.
  • Support Association underwriters to achieve profitable growth of business.
  • Manage strategic and innovative projects, such as pooling and other pricing methodologies.
  • Assist with Life/AD&D, Association, and A&H Pricing Targets as needed by analyzing historical rates, claims, and trend experience.
  • Work with predictive analytics to solve everyday business problems with opportunity to learn R and some advanced analytic techniques.
  • Establish and help implement underwriting guidelines.
  • Support Compliance filings.

Qualifications

  • 3-5+ years of experience in an actuarial or related function.
  • Experience assessing risk and knowledge of group pricing and rating techniques preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills, including strong Excel/VBA/Access skills.
  • Database experience with R or other similar programming language preferred.
  • Proven experience managing projects, influencing and driving results both actuarial and non-actuarial audiences.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and general business management skills are imperative.
  • Intellectually curious and strong desire to further one’s knowledge of the current Healthcare landscape.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$77,040 - $115,560
