Lead Actuarial Strategy. Drive Insightful Decision-Making. Shape the Future of Pricing at Hastings.

Location: Hastings, Michigan| Hybrid or Remote Options Available
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

We're looking for a strategic and analytical leader to join our Actuarial Services Department as a Managing Actuary. This role is key to refining our pricing and reserving practices to support corporate goals around profitability, growth, and retention. You'll guide advanced analytics, support new product development, and lead a team of talented actuarial professionals-while staying plugged into the evolving insurance landscape.
What You'll Do:
  • Lead projects related to pricing, loss reserving, and business strategy using recognized actuarial standards and methodologies.
  • Develop and refine rate indications for all product lines, aligning recommendations with company growth and profitability goals.
  • Apply deep data analytics to support pricing and product strategies-identifying opportunities to boost performance, retention, and competitive advantage.
  • Collaborate across teams (Sales, Underwriting, Claims, Product) to align pricing with market trends and business initiatives.
  • Research competitor offerings and industry data to uncover new pricing tactics and maintain our market edge.
  • Oversee loss reserving processes; monitor actual vs. expected trends and translate insights into pricing strategies.
  • Prepare and present reports to senior leadership, translating complex data into actionable insights.
  • Provide actuarial support for regulatory filings, compliance audits, and cross-departmental initiatives (Legal, Finance, etc.).
  • Mentor and grow a team of Actuarial Analysts and Assistant Actuaries-supporting development and performance.
  • Stay current with industry knowledge and continuing education to maintain licensure and technical expertise.
Additional Role Highlights:
  • Directly manage a small team, including staffing, development, and performance decisions.
  • Act as a key technical resource internally and with external stakeholders (agents, vendors, regulators).
  • Apply a deep understanding of insurance products, rating practices, and compliance requirements.
What You Bring:
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, finance, economics, or related field with strong quantitative focus.
  • Minimum 5 years of actuarial experience in property & casualty insurance.
  • ACAS or ASA designation required; FCAS or FSA preferred.
  • Expertise in pricing, reserving, and predictive analytics tools.
  • Proven ability to manage and deliver complex projects across teams.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills-able to explain complex topics clearly to a variety of audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other data analysis tools.
  • Experience mentoring or managing actuarial staff preferred.
