Play a key role in developing, analyzing, and maintaining workers’ compensation actuarial models within the State Auto Business Lines Unit. This individual will work closely with the Actuarial and Product teams to conduct actuarial analyses, develop monitoring reports, analyze and interpret claim and premium trends, develop recommendations for pricing and reserving, and successfully file rate changes with various state departments of insurance. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in actuarial science, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and experience working with workers compensation insurance data. This is a full-time position that requires a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science or a related field.

 In this role, you can expect to:

  • Build and maintain pricing models for Business Lines, working with other teams within Economics as well as Finance, Strategy, Product Design & Modeling and Actuarial to develop assumptions and validate results
  • Collaborate with teams throughout State Auto Product and Liberty Mutual Global Retail Markets (GRM) to understand profitable growth opportunities, develop pricing indications, and monitor claims analytics
  • Apply analytical and data expertise to provide actionable insights on Workers Compensation production and loss metrics to assess health of business and to support senior leadership decision making and business growth targets
  • Develop, communicate and continually re-evaluate pricing strategies
  • Actively share information and closely collaborate across Product, Marketing, Distribution, and Finance
  • Advocate profitable growth decision framework and principles to ensure relevant and consistent measures are evaluated across the organization

Preferred experience includes:

  • Python and/or R (will be used daily) but will consider baseline knowledge of querying in SQL or SAS with willingness to learn Python or R
  • Actuarial experience is preferred and will support progression through certifications/ongoing education in Actuarial track.
  • Provide support to actuaries and others by performing analysis within a designated business segment/s to assist business decision making, financial planning, and strategy development.

  • Assist in the preparation of actuarial research and complex reports and studies; Communicates and presents findings and exhibits to peers, functional leadership and business leaders
  • Provide clear and concise communication of technical actuarial work to technical and non-technical audiences, and on cross functional teams
  • Retrieves, understands and manipulates data as it relates to assigned and related projects
  • Maintain clear and concise documentation of methods and activities
  • Provide actuarial technical assistance and information to other departments
  • Provide guidance and training to less experienced staff
  • Provide recommendations for and assist in the creation and maintenance of actuarial tools
  • If applicable, positive progress towards pursuing and passing of required actuarial exams

Qualifications

  • Proven math and analytical skills, as normally acquired through the pursuit of a bachelors degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Actuarial Science, or related field.
  • Commitment to achieving Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society.
  • Passing grades on a minimum of 5 Casualty Actuarial Exams is required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years relevant experience required
  • Prior experience and solid knowledge of actuarial techniques and standards, as well as other business operations including financial, underwriting, legal, statistics, claims, sales, etc.
  • Solid oral and written and presentation communication skills and ability to interact effectively within and outside the organization.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Ability to motivate and mentor peers and motivate and train subordinates.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, and apply independent judgment and well-developed critical thinking skills in execution of assignments and projects.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects with minimal direction.
  • Advanced computing skills (MS Office Excel, SAS, etc.); Ability to build models of moderate complexity.
