Job Description

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced qualified or nearly qualified actuary for a senior position within SI’s North America Reserving Group. The role will support the estimation of reserves for business written by the NA BU as well as various management reporting responsibilities around the various Strategic BUs within the NA geography. Lines of business include Excess and Primary casualty lines, various Professional and Commercial property lines as well as expanding platforms in Mexico and Canada. This role reports to the Chief North America Reserving Actuary. The North American Reserving team has responsibility for all direct North America business. Its mission it to be the eyes and ears for the Group Reserving Actuary on these respective business units. The team enjoys the support of shared resources from across the reserving function.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the quarterly actuarial central estimate (ACE) reserving process for the US and Bermuda lines of business within the Insurance Segment.

  • Present quarterly results to Insurance senior management and underwriting teams.

  • Work with the Group and Insurance Chief Reserving Actuaries to establish management best estimate recommendations for the Insurance lines of business.

  • Develop relationships within the Actuarial function with the pricing team and beyond the Actuarial function with Risk, Claims, Finance, and Financial Planning & Analysis and leverage these relationships to enhance an understanding of Sompo International’s business and processes. 

  • Build relationships with senior management within the Insurance Segment (e.g. CEO, CUO) with the goal of becoming a trusted advisor.

  • Lead special projects that allow for a deeper understanding of trends and emerging risks within the Insurance portfolio.

  • Leverage the ACE analysis to provide support to the Group Chief Reserving Actuary in the annual planning process, as required.

  • Keep abreast of changes in regulatory requirement and market developments that may impact Sompo International’s Insurance business.

  • To support other special projects as required by the business.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience:  

  • ACAS or FCAS designation obtained or in progress preferred

  • A background in Insurance is required, including detailed knowledge of at least some of the lines of business referred to above.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications skills, including a proven ability to build relationships with senior management and underwriting teams and to communicate to senior management and board level audience.

  • The candidate must be well-organised, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and consistently meet deadlines without compromising quality.

  • Strong IT skills are required, including proficiency with the usual MS Office Products and some programming experience would be beneficial.

  • Familiarity with ResQ would be highly beneficial.

  • Some experience with modelling ceded reinsurance would be beneficial.

Salary Range: $140,000 - $210,000 Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
