The Senior Vice President of Optum Health Healthcare Economics and Actuarial leads a national team of actuaries, healthcare economics analysts, risk management, data management, and financial analysis experts to support the Optum Health businesses. The contributions of this role are crucial for Optum Health to the achieve its growth and profit objectives through consistent and accurate reserving, trend forecasting, identification of medical expense management opportunities, and evaluation and measurement of medical expense management programs and initiatives.

This leader will be forward-thinking and push our analytics to new levels of insight around our health care cost trends and data. For example, this leader will find ways for his/her team to leverage real-time clinical and other data in addition to traditional claims data to enable us to better understand medical trends. The leader needs to have the ability to then lead their team to put the "story" together and have the executive presence to explain the analysis to Optum Health and UHG senior leaders.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic guidance and insight that allows the team to enable the enterprise to make informed decisions through quality analytics by providing clinical, network, and financial analysis, consulting, and reporting to a broad range of business functions across Optum Health
  • Lead a large, complex organization comprised of actuaries, healthcare economics, risk & quality, data management, network strategy, and product analytic teammates (team size ~450)
  • Partner closely with the leadership teams of the Optum Health businesses to gain business insights and ensure collaboration of teams to maximize analytic capabilities, tools, and resources to meet business objectives
  • Responsible for monthly medical expense forecasts, reserving, pricing trends, explanation of medical cost results and variances, evaluation of emerging medical cost issues, and development and evaluation of health care affordability initiatives
  • Maintain strong relationships with business CEOs, CFOs, finance, clinical, network, affordability, and product teams

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 15+ years of Actuarial and/or Healthcare Economics experience
  • 10+ years of management experience including management of senior staff
  • Solid executive presence and ability to communicate clearly and with influence to senior executives.
  • Proven ability to perform and manage complex actuarial tasks that have a large financial and/or risk impact
  • Significant background in medical cost reserving, trend analysis, and financial forecasting
  • Significant experience working with non-actuarial staff including underwriting, clinical, finance, network, and product teams
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the health care industry within a complex, matrixed organization
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to summarize and present results to senior management
  • Ability to explain and resolve highly complex business problems
  • ASA or FSA designation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree and FSA designation preferred
